Vmware VDI vs Citrix Xendesktop
14. January 2009 by Tony.
from Raj’s Blog
A Few months ago we did a bakeoff between Vmware VDI and Citrix Xendesktop solution.
Few things that are worth a mention for differences between these:
1. Citrix ICA protocol for remote desktop connectivity is better with multimedia apps than RDP 5.x.
2. Both RDP and ICA are bandwidth hogs, ICA might be slightly better over low latency link. Average bandwidth usage over WAN without any policing/acceleration technology was 300kbps with both ICA and RDP.
3. Citrix Presentation server has a great option of saving the disk space for multiple cloned desktops and also upgrading/patching only one master image and refreshing all desktops from it.
4. Citrix Access gateway for secure connectivity from outside seems like a separate purchase.(didn’t test it)
We didn’t go ahead with the whole project at that time.
Now Vmware has announced availability for VMware view that addresses point # 1,3 and 4 above. We are currently doing a bake off of vmware view and I will soon post how it went.

IBM virtual workplace continuity
16. July 2008 by Tony.
I had the pleasure of seeing this demo at Citrix Synergy a few weeks ago and was rather impressed. Essentially, each employee is equipped with a USB stick that allows Web-based access to security-rich servers installed at an IBM® recovery center. In an emergency, you activate the technology by choosing an appropriate scenario and initiating contact with employees.
During an emergency the service combines IBM’s continuity management, notification, and a roll call of available employees with Citrix GotomMYPC and Xenapp to allow access to Applications, Desktops, News, Chat and interaction tools.
While Pricing wasn’t readily available at the time the discussion indicated that it would be a per month/user fee and at the time it seemed that it would be surprisingly inexpensive

On such piece of Software is Power Save by Foroncis, Power company rebates range from 10% - 100% of the purchase price!
You have to love the fact that the power company pays for your software AND you svae money on your power bill as well.
While you will have to do some homework anf fill out the appropriate forms presenting this concept at the next board meeting is a no-brainer
