Free Citrix XenServer

The posts are abuzz this morning with new thaton on Feb. 23 Citrix will announce that it will be offering free licenses to its full XenServer virtualization program and new partnering with Microsoft to provide system management, Citrix Essentials, for Hyper-V and, in return, Microsoft’s System Center will support XenServer

Steven Vaughn-Nichols detailed the Citrix plans on his personal blog. Apparently Citrix briefed a bevy of bloggers about its plan under embargo, but the presentation is flying around in various in-boxes. Vaughn-Nichols notes that Citrix won’t open source XenServer, however.

I can’t wait to see VMwares stock price today…..

XenApp on XenServer

I cam across these today while building out our Demo:Reference Architecture: Explains why a 100% physical architecture was reconfigured to include both physical and virtual systems and deciding factors of why XenServer is the best server virtualization solution for XenApp servers.

Implementation Guide: A step-by-step guide showing how to incorporate a XenApp Farm into a XenServer Platinum environment. Demonstrates how to create a golden XenApp image to be provisioned to any number of virtual machines.

Design Considerations: To meet the needs of the business, a solution like XenServer for XenApp must allow for design decisions. This article focuses on a few of the major considerations when integrating these solutions together.

Consolidation: It’s not just servers anymore…

I’ll be co-presenting two sessions at the IBM 2008 System x and BladeCenter Technical Conference in San Diego July 28 - August 1, 2008 With Tom Vezinia of IBM.

This session details an assessment (funded by IBM) for customers to determine the TCO/ROI benefits of:

  1. Server Consolidation with VMware or XENserver
  2. Desktop consolidation via VMware VDM/ESX
  3. Desktop consolidation via Citrix XenApp / XenDesktop

Also included is a “State of Desktop Virtualization” that details the how/why/when you should deploy the different methods.

If you attending the event please stop by to say hi:
